This from our 2024 Raider Cup Champion Tom Braun
Good Evening Guys,
It occurred to me this morning that I have been given a rare opportunity to say some things to you from my heart. This all because of my miraculous win this year of the Raider Cup. First of all, I want to thank all of the real golfers that carried us hackers on their backs throughout the Raider Cup season. Thank God for you and your skills, and for generous handicaps which allow anomalies, like my win this year, to occur.
We have all been so fortunate. How is it that such a large group of guys from literally dozens of parishes spread all over the St Paul area have created this bond which is still with us after almost 60 years? Cretin, of course, afforded us unique shared challenges and experiences which united us in the same way teams and family are built. Because of this uniqueness, I believe all of us who participate in our functions are proud to say we are Cretin Grads. The yearly quest for the Raider Cup is important. The same can be said of
Jim Hannegan’s wonderful monthly get-togethers, and the yearly Wisconsin Tour. These things keep us all upright and moving. In my mind that is the ultimate goal of all three. Let's try to always keep them welcoming and fun as long as humanly possible. Of course the real reason we spend this time together is that we each receive a lot more in so many ways than we could ever give. The blessings never seem to end. I am amazed at the strength many of us exhibit in our own lives. Not everything is always as we want it to be. Yes shit happens at 77. My hope is for the best possible outcomes for those of us who are facing physical and mental challenges. It is time for us to step up and make that phone call which is so hard to initiate to those guys and/or their spouses that need someone to lean on.
Lastly, many thanks to all of you who supported me when my Mother died this last year. An amazing number of you showed up at Assumption during her funeral Mass and then sat through a seemingly endless Braun Family luncheon and talkfest. I want to give special thanks to my SSP classmate Mike Smeby. First he generously dedicated six Masses that were said for my mother at Assumption church last fall, and secondly, he also is going to take the actual Raider Cup home with him tonight, and display it proudly, until it is awarded to someone next year. God Bless you Mike. I hope your mantle is strong, and your wife has a good sense of humor. Thank you also to my friend Golfer Dave who graciously offered to read these words to you. I am sure he is doing a fine job and is embellishing where necessary. Wishing you all the best. See you next year!
